This year marks already the tenth edition of the Walking Dinner Willemspark /Archipel, a lustrum year! It all started in April 2012, when local resident Cathrien Ruoff placed a call in the local paper: who is interested in starting a committee to organise a Walking Dinner? She had been inspired by a newspaper article about the Walking Dinner in Statenkwartier, organised since 2010. An evening where local residents meet during a special three-course dinner: each course at a different address and with changing company.

In autumn 2012, a team of six enthusiastic volunteers started organising the first Walking Dinner Willemspark /Archipel. A website was created spontaneously, and then there was no turning back. The organisation reached out to neighbours via digital channels, by addressing passers-by at Albert Heijn and through posters on as many windows as possible. Jet de Meester designed the now famous logo for promotional material.

The Walking Dinner team talked to the organisers of the Walking Dinner in Statenkwartier a couple of times, but over the years they gave their own twist to the concept. The focus is still on bringing local residents together in an easily accessible way. Guests join tables in stately buildings, but also in student rooms, between the toy cars of the youngest residents or the moving boxes of new neighbours and thus see different sides of our neighbourhood. The chefs decide on the menu and the details of the evening. Haute cuisine is absolutely not a requirement; a simple recipe is sufficient, although the chefs usually put a lot of energy into tasty menus, a special presentation and a warm welcome. Thanks to these principles, everyone can participate with their own favourite recipes. Pieter van Lierop, who has been an enthusiastic chef for years, thinks carefully about the dishes he prepares, taking into account the tight schedule on the night. On the day itself, preparations start on time. His wife provides suitable decorations for the table and the house; their address cannot be missed because of the Walking Dinner flag at the door.

In 2013, participation exceeded the goal of fifty neighbours: 101 guests and nearly thirty chefs signed up for the first edition! Planning was done by hand and proved to be a puzzle; Cathrien estimates that putting together the routes took ten hours in the first few years… From the fourth year onwards, the planning was done more efficiently, which saved half the time. The Walking Dinner team now uses an algorithm that takes into account the table composition per course, the distance between the addresses (certainly important for local residents with reduced mobility) and dietary requirements.

It is always a puzzle for the organisation to find a balance between the number of chefs and guests, but so far there have always been enough seats at the tables. Participants register individually or as a couple. From the start, the Walking Dinner has also attracted international residents. The chefs and their host(esse)s determine how they facilitate the conversation at the table. Pieter has his own formula, others let the conversations arise spontaneously. And although it is of course always exciting who will join, all participants do their very best to make the evening a success for everyone. Once at the table, it often turns out that the guests have something in common, or they surprise each other with their stories. The unexpectedly nice conversations (and of course the delicious food) ensure that many local residents have participated in the event for several years; they now recognise many neighbours.

Over the years, the programme has remained the same to a large extent: the participants start the evening with drinks, enjoy three courses at three different addresses and conclude the evening together in a nearby pub. During the closing reception the chefs are given extra attention and receive a nice souvenir. Those who participated in every edition have a collection of at least an apron, oven gloves, a mug, a bag and a notepad.

After four years, Cathrien handed over the organisation to other volunteers in the neighbourhood, but she remained involved as a chef. Even now, the organisation is in the hands of volunteers from the neighbourhood, who start preparing the new edition six months in advance. At the end of each edition, the event is evaluated to make the next edition an even greater success. Changes that have been implemented include the start at several locations (the closing reception with all participants has remained), the possibility of serving not three but one or two courses, and the involvement of local entrepreneurs who contribute in cash or in kind. The central idea behind the Walking Dinner has not changed: getting to know your neighbours during a delicious meal. A formula that can last for many years to come!
